Girl & The Goat: Where Chicago’s Bold-Flavor Era Began
Few restaurants get to say they changed a city’s palate. When Stephanie Izard fired up her wood oven on Randolph Street in 2010, the West Loop was still a warehouse district — today it is America’s most famous Restaurant Row, and this dining room remains its beating heart. The cooking is what it always was: loud, global, umami-soaked and built for sharing.
The Chef
Izard became the first woman to win Bravo’s Top Chef, then parlayed the title into this flagship with Boka Restaurant Group. The accolades kept coming: a James Beard Award for Best Chef: Great Lakes in 2013, and Saveur magazine crowning it America’s best new restaurant. She has since spun off Little Goat and Duck Duck Goat, but this is the mothership.
What to Order
The wood-oven-roasted pig face — crispy head-meat patties under a sunny egg with tamarind and cilantro — is the dish people fly in for. The sauteed green beans in fish-sauce vinaigrette with cashews have converted a generation of vegetable skeptics. Add the sticky glazed pork shank and whatever goat dish is on the ever-rotating menu, because the name is not just branding.
The Space
Design firm 555 International torched cedar planks by hand for the walls, and Izard calls the result “rustic with a bit of badass.” A thirty-foot open kitchen with a wood-burning oven runs the length of the room, the counter seats put you right at the pass, and the noise level is a rolling, happy roar.
Who It’s For
Food travelers ticking off a bucket-list table, groups who order everything and pass plates until they are all sauce-stained and happy, and Top Chef fans hoping to spot Izard on the line.
Good to Know
How far ahead should I book? Weeks, ideally — though same-day tables pop up online and the bar holds seats for walk-ins.
What is The Tiniest Goat? A chef’s-counter prix fixe experience with a front-row seat to the kitchen.
Is it vegetarian-friendly? Surprisingly yes — the vegetable dishes are some of the menu’s biggest stars.
Is there brunch? Sunday only, late morning to early afternoon.
Lunch on weekdays? No — dinner nightly from late afternoon, so plan accordingly.
