Carnivale: A Pan-Latin Kitchen That Cooks as Loud as It Looks

It would be easy for a restaurant this flamboyant to coast on decor, but Carnivale’s kitchen refuses to be upstaged. Ceviche bright with citrus, saffron-stained paella, a grill loaded with Argentinian cuts — this Fulton River District giant has been feeding Chicago’s biggest celebrations genuinely ambitious pan-Latin cooking since 2004.

What to Order

Start with the shrimp ceviche, then commit to the Spanish-style seafood paella: octopus, clams, calamari and scallops folded into bomba rice with a tomato-saffron broth. Carnivores should rally the table around the Argentinian-style grilled meat platter — churrasco, short rib, chorizo and morcilla under a slick of chimichurri — while the ropa vieja and arroz con mariscos hold down the Caribbean end of the menu. Mojitos come classic, raspberry or ginger, and the tequila shelf runs dozens of bottles deep.

The Space

Jerry Kleiner — the designer behind Red Light, Marche and Opera — went maximal here: a ceiling that soars four stories, day-glo color on every surface, gallery walls of art, balcony seating and a long curved bar that literally straddles the Kennedy Expressway. It is one of the largest dining rooms in Chicago, and it still fills up.

Birthday armies, bachelorette parties, office blowouts and anyone convinced that dinner should feel like an event, not an errand.

Good to Know

Is there live music? Most nights — jazz, salsa and merengue bands play the floor-level stage, with no cover charge outside special events.

Do they serve lunch? Yes, on weekdays — by far the calmest way to try the kitchen.

What is Brunch con Ritmo? A weekend Latin brunch with a live DJ, salsa and bachata lessons and an open dance floor between courses.

What is The Alley? An intimate speakeasy-cabaret hidden at the restaurant’s north end, entered through the back alley; seats are few and advance reservations are essential.

How far ahead should groups book? For weekends, reserve well in advance — the room is enormous, but so is the demand for celebrations.
