Duck Duck Goat: Stephanie Izard’s “Reasonably Authentic” Chinese Playground
Top Chef winner Stephanie Izard describes Duck Duck Goat as “reasonably authentic” Chinese food, and the wink is the point. This Fulton Market kitchen is a love letter to Chinatown storefronts and Sichuan cooking, filtered through one of Chicago’s most playful culinary minds — noodles slapped by hand, dumplings folded in-house, Peking ducks hanging in view.
The Concept
Opened in 2016 as Izard’s third project with Boka Restaurant Group — after Girl & the Goat and Little Goat Diner — the restaurant channels the Chinese-American dishes she grew up loving and the techniques she chased across China, all a short stroll from her West Loop mothership.
What to Order
The Dan Dan slap noodles, hand-pulled and named for the sound the dough makes, are non-negotiable. Add the jiaozi potstickers stuffed with beef short rib and bone marrow, crab rangoon with charred-pineapple sweet-and-sour, and duck fried rice crowned with a soft duck egg. Planners can call ahead for the whole Peking duck — only a handful are roasted each evening. Finish with crispy banana dumplings or a scoop from the seasonal baobing soft-serve bar.
The Space
A chain of rooms styled like a decades-old Chinatown banquet hall: red and beige tones, honey-colored woven banquettes, vintage electric fans and flea-market tchotchkes, a tearoom, and a window where lacquered ducks dangle over the kitchen. In summer the patio adds a breezier register.
Who It’s For
Groups eating family-style, food obsessives crossing off an Izard trifecta, and anyone who thinks a dumpling should come with a backstory.
Good to Know
How hard is a table? Weekends book out well in advance — reserve early or aim for weeknights and early slots.
How do I get the whole Peking duck? Call ahead to reserve one; the nightly supply is deliberately small.
Is there a dim sum brunch? Yes — weekends from late morning to mid-afternoon, a favorite ritual worth building a Sunday around.
Vegetarian-friendly? A dedicated vegetarian and vegan selection, including mapo tofu, goes well beyond token options.
Can I sit outside? The seasonal patio is lovely in warm months and pairs nicely with a Fulton Market evening stroll.
