STK Chicago: Steak with a Soundtrack
STK flipped the steakhouse script: instead of dark wood and hushed conversation, you get an in-house DJ, a glowing lounge and beef serious enough to silence any skeptic. This River North outpost of the global brand calls its formula “Vibe Dining” — and the kitchen holds up its end of the bargain far better than the party angle suggests.
The Concept
STK grew out of New York and now spans cities from Las Vegas to London, each location pairing a chic lounge with a full-scale chophouse program. The Chicago edition landed in the Kinzie corridor, squeezed between galleries and some of the city’s most famous steak temples — and it deliberately positions itself as the loud, young counterweight to all of them.
What to Order
Start with the Lil’ BRGs — wagyu sliders on sesame buns with special sauce that have become the brand’s calling card — or the tuna tartare. The steak list runs from an eight-ounce spinalis ribeye to a twenty-ounce bone-in rib steak and splurge-level Japanese A5 wagyu; the bone-in filet can be crowned with king crab. Sides are half the fun: parmesan truffle fries, jalapeño cheddar grits and sweet corn pudding. For dessert, the chocolate sphere with white chocolate mousse melts open tableside.
The Space
Curved leather booths face each other so everyone catches the action, a rippling white light installation rolls across the ceiling like ocean waves, and black accents keep the room mod and clubby. The DJ plays through dinner in the evenings — energetic, though conversation at the table survives.
Who It’s For
Birthday crews, group celebrations and anyone who wants a proper steak dinner with nightlife energy instead of steakhouse solemnity. Not the pick for a quiet tête-à-tête.
Good to Know
Do I need a reservation? Strongly recommended, especially Friday and Saturday nights when the lounge fills fast; book online.
Is there a dress code? Smart casual — most guests dress up for the scene, so skip athletic wear.
Is there a happy hour? Yes, early evenings on most days plus a late-night round — one of the more affordable ways to sample the menu.
Does STK serve brunch? Sunday brunch runs late morning to early afternoon with steakhouse twists on the classics.
Anything for non-steak eaters? Plenty: seared scallops, crispy lobster tails, seafood towers and vegetable-forward sides carry a full meal.
